Only if knock(KR-knock retard) is picked will the timing start to be pulled back. Then higher octane will see a benefit.
Your best bet would be to get a program run on a computer so that both are monitored. I was able to see a timing being pulled at 4500 RPMs on a my C5 with a ODB-II program. It did not effect peak number because I went back again with a bottle of octane boost and the detonation was gone.
This was done in the fall when we had oxygenated fuel like we are using now.
