If as has been suggested
"...the ECU uses the ABS speed sensor to determine vehicle speed, then correlates this with engine RPM to figure out the selected gear."
Then...
Fooling the "engine speed sensor" seems sure to result in running issues whilst "putting a square wave in to make the ECU think the car is doing 70 mph" would seem to mean using that square wave instead of the ABS sensor. Not only does that not sound safe, but braking at any speed other than 70 mph would result in the ECU thinking one of the wheels was going at a different speed to the others and trying to correct it. Not good.
I like the idea of being able to disable the boost limitation in first and second gears under driver control (rather than using a MBC) but this thread is making me think it is easily acheivable.
unless of course it is simply a switch that indicates selected gear
