A carb is the original MAF sensor, measuring air and adding fuel as needed. It seems to me that using a bosche type valve would work just fine. Use a pressure/vacuum source off the manifold plenum, not off the carbs, unless you can be sure its not a ported or regulated outlet. And, because the BOV will be open when there is manifold vacuum, you will have to put a filter (something like a breather filter summitracing #MOR-68810, lawn mower filter, or look at the one on Taliafero's site), on the return side of the BOV.
Just late night postulating. I remember Peter's post about I-25 north of Denver. That is one scary-assed road on a saturday night!
