Sounds like you may have some carb problems? Does it have the origonal solex carb on it. In my opion instead of cleaning and rebuilding it, I would just put a single barrel webber on it and be done with it. I have a 96 and a sonett III which both have a 1.7 v4 german ford engine which as you known, and they both have webbers which is a more reliable and easier to work on carb. Jack Lawrance in NY is the v4 guy and has many webber upgrades. The v4 engine is a industrial engine in alot of pumps and things it also the basis for many ford v6 and v8 engines so some parts you can get off the self of your local napa. Clutchs are easy to fine even though most of those engines went in things without transmitions. The engine and trans are pretty reasonable to pull because you can take the whole nose of the car off to get to them. Hope you enjoy your new car and you can always bother us saab nuts for info.
