For a long time I've thought about swapping in something unique to the sonett. I was gonna keep these ideas to myself, but you may find them useful.
I have some experience swapping inline 4 Honda CBR600 motors into 4 wheeled cars, and they are ridiculously fun. For reference, they make about 110hp, weigh about 130 pounds (no exhaust), redline around 14k, and the transmissions are internal to the case. And, despite being a modern motor, there is no tricky active intake or variable valve timing to get screwed by because motorcycle, so the wiring is relatively straight forward. You'd have to design your own chain driven final drive sprocket, diff, diff housing, and all mounting, but it would be wicked fun.
Finally, if you really wanted to stick with a V4, (NOT inline 4) Honda also specializes in V4 motorcycle motors. Who'd have thunk.
The most important part of this is that the motors are easy to fit in the small sonett engine bay. Motor and diff mounts would be easy enough to design as well.
Anyway.... just my $0.02
