Well, it was time to fix the wiper motor anyway... Posted by eric in vermont [Email] (#2058) [Profile/Gallery] (more from eric in vermont) on Sat, 2 Dec 2023 08:53:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Yesterday I had a nice relaxing day working on my son's '92 900. There was several things wrong and it all went pretty well.
Today I decided to put my '74 Sonett away for the winter. I start by changing the oil, then jacking it up and kind of giving it a once-over. I was sitting outside warming it up and the temp gauge began to move, so I blipped the throttle a few times.
There was a bit of a blam. Immediately the engine vibration increased. And the alternator light glowed orange.
That can only mean one thing.
I pulled it in the shop and popped the hood. Sure enough, the belt was intact and nothing was turning.
Confirmed. Balance shaft gear teeth are stripped. Which means pulling the nose and pulling the motor and fixing it.
Oh well. It happened right in the yard- could have been far from home. And I have all the parts on hand- a complete new timing gear set, a steel balance shaft gear I pulled from an AC equipped car years ago, new balance shaft bearings if it needs it, and all the gaskets.
I'll be able to get at the wiper motor now- it was a bit sluggish this past season.
