Let me add one more observation to this thread. I had a terrible time with overheating on a 1.5 with a bit of a performance build. After pulling intake manifold an heads i noticed something. The water flow in the engine comes in through the back of the block, then into the heads from the forward end and has to exit the heads at the rear two cylinders in order to properly cool the heads down an not make steam. To do that you have to have forward water ports of the intake manifold blocked (except for the small bleed holes). with that done the water flows all of the way through the head rather than not getting good flow at the rear two cylinders. To support that Jack Lawrence used to always add a thin piece of copper sheet over the two forward water ports in the gasket to keep it from erroding away over time
