In the original Saabs with 2-stroke engines you could not use engine braking with the throttle closed for very long without starving the engine bearings of lubrication. The 2-stroke has oil mixed with the gas which passes through the crankcase on its way to the intake ports in the cylinder walls, lubricating the ball and roller bearings on its way through. The mechanism is just like the free wheel on a bicycle at a larger scale, allowing the engine to return to idle when you lift off the throttle and then re-engaging when you bring engine RPM back up to match the gear speed. [ Autos without freewheel are like a track bike where you slow the bike by slowing the pedal speed - and can actually pedal backward. ]This was also considered a great benefit in ice racing and ice driving because lifting off the throttle is less likely to break the tires loose no matter how little traction there is. Saabs with freewheel have a lever to engage and disengage the freewheel mechanism.
