Two reasons to disable the freewheel - (1) with it disabled, you can use engine braking and (2) the freewheel is pretty fragile - snap accelerations with the freewheel enabled tended to break it, and then you were screwed.
A point about the 2-strokes - the freewheel was only required for the non-oil-injected two strokes. Some two strokes had oil injected directly into the engine, so there was no oil starvation with the throttle closed. I locked out the freewheel on my two-stroke Sonett about 20 years ago and have had no problems.
