I have done all that you have described. The 96 springs are taller, I had to remove 1 1/2 turns and have the cut off end re-bent to fit the mount. Worked great and the rear was much improved, although the ride was much stiffer; equivalent to a car set up for track use. It wasn't so stiff that I had problems with the rear skipping around on rough roads, which was one of my worries.
The front sway bar will bolt right in after you cut out the little oval patches where the bar passes through the lower pan. The mounting hardware for both the control arm ends and the body mounts will transplant directly from a 96 to the Sonett; the holes are already drilled in the lower pan.
It is MUCH easier with the moter out, but can be done in place.
