35 Miles?? Damn...I'd say throw some screw drivers, small vice-grips, and some duck-tape in the passenger seat and go! But, since you said you were overly cautious:

Spark Plugs: Vary depending on open or closed deck engines for '68 Sonetts. Do not get the wrong plugs!! The closed deck plugs are of different lengths, depending on which engine you have, installing the wrong plugs could result in piston damage!!
For the 1500 OPEN DECK engine (grey painted, up to VIN# 510) use:
Part # Bosch W225 T35
Part # Champion L 82 Y
Part # NGK B7H

for the closed deck 1500(BLUE painted engine chassis 511+)
Part # Auto-lite AG-22
NGK: Platinum; BPR6EVX; Gap .028
Or any plug that your local auto parts store shows as a valid plug for Sonett IIIs

For oil, I'm kinda picky, but I like RedLine 10W-30. You'll need 4 quarts.
Since RedLine can be tough to find locally, I also think Mobile-1 fully synthetic is a good alternative.

For the filter, a FRAM PH-16 should do fine. You can of course get a more expensive 'racing' filter...but...do you really need that?

Valve cover gaskets can be obtained from http://www.thesaabsite.com. (they also sell an entire engine gasket set, for a reasonable price, FYI).
You MAY be able to get these locally from parts store chains, but I kinda doubt it. Advance auto's website says they can ship it in 5 days, I doubt any local store is going to stock these.

By the way, other than some annoying carburetor problems that have caused temporary stalling problems (now fixed) my '69 Sonett has NEVER left me stranded. In fact, I would have to say that it is the most reliable of ANY car I've owned (and that includes 8 other Saab 900s and a '99 9-3).

Hope this helps!
