I test drove three '06 9-3 models a couple of weeks ago in Dallas-two Aeros (auto and stick) and a 2.0T auto. I drove the Aero stick first and loved it. The one I drove wasn't sloppy shifting like the one C&D tested and was really fun to drive. I drove the Aero auto and 2.0T auto back-to-back.
There wasn't night/day difference in acceleration between the two-the V6 had more low grunt pull than the 2.0T. I didn't want to flog new cars with 10 miles on them, so I didn't really explore its full potential.
I've driven several 9-3SS at one time or another, and was probably more impressed that the 2.0T held its own against its more powerful brethren. However, the twin pipe exhast note on the Aero V6T and its inherent drivetrain smoothness over the 4 cylinder makes the Aero a winner.
Can't go wrong with either, IMO. My only disappointment with the Aero is the choice of tires (in this case, Continental ContiProContact all season tires). Why all season tires? Tire Rack doesn't even carry these tires (in the 235/45R17 size) as a replacement. Go figure.
SAAB's highest performing car to date (according to SAAB anyway) should have decent tires. All their competitors in the recent C&D comparo had Y or W summer tires.
Poor decision, if you ask me.
