Well, first of all, the 2.3 is a "stroked" 2.0, not a "bored" 2.0. That said, the Global 4 has Saab design cues all over it. The cam drive layout, the balance shaft design, the way the thermostat fits - these are all more like the Saab motor than anything GM ever made before (like the Olds DOHC 2.4, or any of the Saturn motors). What *is* classic GM is the manufacturing - lost foam aluminum cast block (the head, however, is die cast for more strength). Roller valve followers is another classic GM touch that adds power and reduces fuel consumption. Since the Global 6 is essentially a V-6 version of the same basic motor, I'd say that GM is now using Saab motors more and more.
