I'll bite....
I am not claiming that the current engines that Saab has in the line-up are not Saab engines....only that they may need some refinement where, over time, they will be considered or revered as "Saab engines".
The Saab mechanics that I have discussed engines with have all agree that the B234R is the best engine Saab ever made. The B235 has internals that are not quite as strong.
The global engines are very stout and well designed. The 4 cyl. is capable of more HP/torque than the V6, in stock tune, with just a chip replacement.
I don't think the new 9-3ss turbo V6 is the fastest Saab ever....but a good performer and, like I said, when the tuners get ahold of this thing and it gets a couple of years refinement...well it could get to be real fun.
I have 3 ea.'97 9K's...all autos. 1 Aero and 2 CSE annis.
One anni has a 3"turbo back exhaust, stage 3 SQR ECU and an ITG air filter. It gets around 29 MPG. I would guess it is faster than the V6 in acceleration. Oh...and it does have a real Saab engine in it. 265 HP and 458NM torque. Currently has 117,000 miles and does not leak or use oil.
I also have a '02 9-3 HOT with 60+K...no sludge problems..but I use straight syn and change every 3K miles, Like you are supposed to for a turbo engine.
Let the debates begin!!!
