I can only agree with you if you are buying used. Saabs depreciate so fast that of course they will be a good buy at resale. I find it fortunate I was able to sell my 06 Aero SS 6 speed w/23K miles for asking price of $22,000. Even the dealer said I was lucky since they had CPO cars on the lot for less money and could not sell them (I think the fact mine was a 6-speed made the difference; I had two willing buyers on the same day, plus it was black on parchment, a sharp combo). Let me go on the record saying I LOVED that car.
But that same car was a base Aero model which I thought was perfectly well equipped for the price. Why spend $1800 for a premium package, just so I could get memory seats and auto up windows both standard on the BMW)? And wouldn't you agree that the use of FAKE wood in the base Saab 9-3 is ridiculous? Plasstic aluminum trim would look better, but then what European car company even uses that? BMW offers a choice of 3 different REAL woods or aluminum trim in their lowest price models (base 328i sedan is $33,275). Moonroofs are standard and there is not an ugly wheel design in the whole 3-series.
Add in the inevitable cost of a front and rear brake job in the first 20-30,000 miles (not covered by Saab but covered by BMW) and the gap gets much smaller.
The current Saab list prices should be a good 10% below what they are right now. When you are in this price range, is 10% up or down really enough to sway someone away from a car?
But, LOOK at the price of the new Saabs; they are the in the same ball park as the competition. Most of the BMW and Audi dealers in the SF bay area load their cars up and give a false impression of the cars being more expensive. But if you look at a base model and are selective about the options, there is truly little difference, in fact it makes the Saab seem expensive.
For the same reason I would not consider buying a USED BMW (strong resale), I will probably not buy a NEW Saab ever again (weak resale).
And as you can see from many of the posters here, Saab's niche market is growing smaller each day.
