Remember when a Saab 99 came with 185/70-15 size tires as the high performance size? Now the 15's are 205/65, the 16's are 215-65 and the 17's are 225/45!
IMO the secret to the handling of a 9-3SS is not the size of the wheel and tire combo, but the attention Saab paid to the improving the weight distribution, the addition of Re-Axe passiver rear wheel steering and the all aluminum suspension and brake components that allow an excellent ride handling compromise.
One note about 9-SS' is that if you do get the 17's the ride is still really decent, even with the sport chassis. The 15's and 16's do ride a little better, but the 17's don't beat you up like they do in some other brands.
There's a school of thought that says skinnier tires can be more fun. It's easier, and you're going slower, to find the limits.
