Last week I upgraded from 16's to 17's and I checked-around first. While it is true that some wheels are stronger than others, the consenses of the people I talked to was that: the main reason 17's are more volunerable to damage is due to the lower profile tire, and I agree.
Everything in engineering is a tradeoff, in fact I've seen engineering described as the art of compromise, but anyway, the lack of sidewall height (lower profile) will give a return of increased handling and steering response due to less overall flex in the suspension as a whole, that same increase will directly reduce the amount of initial flex that is available when hitting a large bump. Because there is less tire deflection available to absorbe the impact before the wheels/suspension are subjected, 17" wheels are exposed to larger forces than a comparable 16" setup with the same combined overall diameter. Additionally, the extra diameter provides the road surface with more leverage to create an overall larger bending moment about the axle.
Beside the ride-quality concerns, that's why for a daily driven vehicle it's especially unwise to go with extremely large wheels, those that do will be replacing associated support bushings and bearings on a much more frequent interval.
For those willing to deal-with the trade-offs, 17" wheels undoubtly provide better handling, feedback, and roadholding ability on dry roads in comparison to 16" wheels with comparable quality tires. But if that choice is made you shouldn't cry or be surprised about bent rims.
