Larger wheels sharpen turn in and high speed handling. I have drive SAABs with 15s, 16s and 17s and there is no comparison for high speed lane changes and hard cornering, the 17s outperform the smaller wheels. Tire selection has more to do with ride and noise. As for the relative fragility of 17s vis a vis smaller rims, the OEM SAAB rims were not durable and made of rather soft light weight alloys. I dented two 15" rims on my 9-3 as OEMS for $250 per pop, while my 17"s from Tire Tack have hit craters at 80 + miles per hour with no discernable damage. Moreover the original OEMs rims on the 99-2001 9-3s were easily scraped or scarred by curbs. Better quality after market rims are a great investment. Ride quality is a function of suspension, pavement and most of all tread patter and tread width. Lets face, nothing rides worth than snow tires regardless of wheel size.
My suggestion is to drive a freinds SAAB with 17"s if you currently think it does not make a performance difference, you won't after driving one.
