If the car was properly taken care of, you probably will not have sludge issues. The problem there is the manual calls for 10000 mile oil changes under normal usage. Normal usage of a vehicle is almost impossible. The other issues of the DIC and Code 8 A/C issues, well, there is no excuse for those now a days.
Yes, most people who post here do so looking for solutions to problems, so keep that in mind while reading this board. However, I must say these cars have not generally aged "gracefully."
I replaced my 9-5 with an Acura TL. Initially I missed the Saab, particularly the low end torque of the engine. A few months ago I had the opportunity to drive a 9-5 similar the one I sold and I was struck by how unrefined the powertrain felt compared to the Acura. The low end grunt of the Saab 2.3 was there; the car pulled stronger at low RPMS than the Acura, however it did so with more noise and vibration. It was at the level I remembered, but now is just seems harsh by comparison. Of course we are comparing an engine that has a history going back 15 or so years vs. a relatively new design from Honda.
If the 9-5 you are looking at has been well cared for the price is right, you probably will be fine. If you afford the payments on a new car I would advise you to go that route.
