All cars break from time to time. The 9-5 is no exception.
The sludge issue is the result of questionable maintenance habits combined with a turbo motor and a PCV system that is somewhat prone to blockage. It is not unique to Saab - Volkswagen has had similar problems with the 1.8t in the Passat and Audi A4; Toyota has a V6 that is referred to as a "sludge monster." Change your oil and use a good quality oil and filter (no, I'm not going to start the oil wars again) and you'll be fine.
The DIC is a known weakness, so consider it a maintenance item rather than a lifetime item. I changed mine preemptively at 100k miles. Again, the problem is not unique to Saab - VW had to replace a LOT of coil packs on 1.8t and W8 engines a couple years back.
Do enough research and you'll find that every car has its weaknesses. You pays your money and you takes your chances.
Frankly, reading here is probably the worst thing any prospective buyer could do. (I say this only half in jest).
