I have a 2000 9-5 Aero with 249,621 miles on it......and no sludge! There are sludge stories circulating; however, they have a few common characteristics. 1) The oil has not been changed frequently enough, and 2) The car has been driven on may short trips wherein it has not had time to warm up. The instances of sludge I've read about always seem to have some of these qualities.

I realize that my experience is that of one owner..... I have always changed the oil at 5,000 mile intervals. My driving has been extensively highway wherein the average speed has been 65-80 MPH, and the trip duration has been 1 hour or more.

Finally, the sludge stories have included other marques.... Toyota has a serious problem to name one. The root cause seems to be similar.... failure to change the oil and filter frequently enough. Auto manufacturers have done a good job selling the 10-15K mile oil change intervals....they have done a terrible job qualifying that recommendation.
