I have a 2003 9-5 Aero and drive it on an average of about 3,000 miles per month in and around Florida. I am on my 3rd. set of tires and have had this "cupping" issue that others have also had. I am getting frustrated with this because I keep doing what the dealer recommends and also what my local tire shop recommends and I still have this problem. I have surfed your BB and see a lot of related issues with tires and alignment, but would like to get direct feedback from this experienced group as to my next move.
My OEM tires were Pirellis which lasted about 30k, but had the noise issue for a while before I replaced them with a set of Pirelli Nero M&S's. These which were supposed to have a longer treadlife but had to replaced after another 30k mainly due to the inside edge cupping again. My dealer mechanic said I needed to rotate my tires more often to avoid this, so I started rotating at evry 5k synthetic oil change. These are directional tires so only front-back rotation is possible. The problem seems more apparent on the left side of my car. I then purchased a set of the Yokohama AVS db S2s which were super quiet for about 15k until the cupping problem started to be noticed recently after another rotation. I have only 20k on this set and the noise is unbearable now , so I am shopping Tire Rack again for another new set and wonder which way to go.
I have had the alignment checked about evry 10k and the shop tells me that it is barely off. They now are recommending an alignment at each 5k oil change along with the rotation, but I am worried that this won't make any difference. My previous cars would always get 50-60k out of a set of tires and at the rate that I drive tires are a major expense. I do mostly interstate driving at 75mph so low noise and long treadlife are my top priorities.
I see some talk about alignment specs and the negative camber on this Saab and suspect it is the root cause, but I am at a loss as to how to resolve that! I have an alignment and wheel balance contract with Tire Kingdom so the freqency of checks doesn't cost me any extra. What is the best "expected" treadlife for tires on this car and do the 17 inch wheels cause part of the problem due to the lower profile tires? If I could get a set of asymettrical tires, then I could do more rotation around the car and even out the wear, but who sells tires like that for this car? My desire is to get at least 40-50k out of a set of tires and not to have to deal with the noise problem which seems to be caused by the "cupping" issue. At this point I am looking at some Bridgestone or Kumho tires due to data on Tire Rack. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated on a plan of attack for me to pursue to resolve this frustrating issue.
Thanks,
Chuck
