I never heard the term "cupping" until I was told by my Saab mechanic that my tires, the rears especially, had this problem. It was invisible to me until he showed me my car up on a lift. All the tires had excessive wear on the inside edge area and it appears as a scalloped pattern around the tire, alternating high spots and low spots, though very subtle it is what creates the same noise as a bad wheel bearing, which is what I thought was wrong with my car! The wear was on all the tires, but was probably created by the rear wheels and ended up on all the tires due to rotation. Apparently my Saab is setup with negative camber on the rear wheels which places more pressure on this part of the tire. My tires look very healthy otherwise and if it wasn't for this particular wear problem, I would get another 15k+ out a set.
