Car came in on a tow truck due to a rattling noise. I thought it was a waterpump due to the type of noise but realized the imminent danger after looking at the water pump pulley and seeing that that one was tracking perfectly.
I ran around the car and shut off the engine and started to remove the timing belt cover.
The timing belt tensioner bearing had completly seized up and it had twisted the spring loaded portion of tensioner to pieces and the pulley was actually spinning around that broken tensioner shaft creating a hellish noise.
You can see part of some plastic washer that have melted completly from the heat and some debris on top of the water pump.
Luckily, everything stayed together and the timing belt didn't jump timing, ruining the valves and cylinder heads.
I'm mighty disappointed in this timing belt setup. Especially the pulley bearings.
These bearings are made by SKF which used to be the crown jewel of Swedish design and quality and what Volvo and later Saab built their quality reputaion on since they used SKF bearings in their cars.
I cannot understand how the bearing life can be soo short in a seemingly big/sturdy bearing compared to other car makers timing belt setup, and that those cars last up to around 100K before the first belt replacement.
The owner called the dealer but since it was not the belt that broke but a pulley they couldn't do anything for warranty since it is a 1999.
So ones again, make sure to have the whole tensioner kit and pulleys replaced at every 60K miles timing belt replacement.
