Hi Anders. I stopped in at a Volvo dealer to visit a friend who sells Volvos, and was also accompanied by a fellow I work with. To make a long story short the guy I work with test drove a S40, S60 and XC70 and ended buying an XC70 nicely equipped for $ 33.4 K.

While reviewing the buyers list of things I was surprised to learn that Volvo does not require synthetic oil, and according to the sales person, Volvos have very few turbo problems. Also when looking under the hood of the S60, it would seem that things like the alternator and accessories were fairly easy to get to.

Since you also service Volvos, I wonder if you can comment or compare to Saab:

frequency of Volvo turbo issues
any sludge or engine problems, particularily Volvos running non syn oil
ease of servicing the Volvo engine (T5)
also in light of Volvos using a timing belt, how dependable is their belt and pulley setup ? Many autos with a well designed timing belt system will easily go 100k on a timing belt and pulleys.

The T5 seems to be a smoother engine than the Saab I4, but I do not care for the smaller rear seat of the Volvos. The sales person claimed that 80% of the Volvos they sell are AWD.

thanks, Dtech
