Just got back from my local Saab dealer after dealing with an intermittent CEL. It turned out to be a faulty IDM (ignition cassette). The dealer was aware of the pending recall and called to check about the status of my "03" Aero.

All I got was bad news......Saab was NOT going to cover this one! They are ONLY working with 00-02 4cyl. engines. I was then quoted $592 to have it replaced today as I am out of warranty with 100k miles.

I called Saab customer service myself while at the dealership, which turned out to be a major waste of energy. The rep who took the call was rude and of no help whatsoever, although she kept apologizing. She said the governement was in control of the recall terms and not Saab. She said I could send in a letter requesting reimbursement, but not to really expect action.

The dealer mentioned that the parts price was going to drop dramatically as soon as the recall started and that I had the option to wait a couple of weeks and come back. I chose that option, but upon checking out with the cashier, the service writer came in and told me he would install it today for $349.20, which he claims is the "new" price. Since I depend on this car for my livelyhood and drive all over Florida an avg. of 3k/mo., I went with that option just to be on the safe side.

I want to keep fighting with Saab on this because I feel it is the same part and the same problem that the upcoming recall deals with. What advice can you good people give me so that I might be able to get restitution on this? Apparently the IDM installed today is the newer style that the recall folks will be getting, and the dealer mentioned that this version has been out about a year now. If that is the case, then what about the 03's thru 05's??? Must be the same part right? The p/n on my reciept is 30-583-218, which I am not sure is an actual Saab part number, it may be a dealer cross-reference.

Who else has had this failure after 2002? Who do I write to besides Saab? I think this is totally unfair if this IS the same exact part! Can anybody verify the part history for me......Anders maybe?
