Speaker configuration in 9-5 -00 (long one, sorry)

Hi!
I've just bought an Saab 9-5 year model -00. The only negative thing about this car so far is the speaker and stereo configuration.
I've noticed that it should be possible to place speakers in 4 places; top of the dashboard, front doors, rear doors and behind the rear seat.
However, I have also noticed that in my car (wich is the se model, probebly with no additional stereo config.), the only sounding speakers seem to be the one's in the top front, and in the rear doors.
So, now to my question...
What is needed to make this car sound good? I've heard that in the better stereo units there is an external amplifier. Is that correct, and do I need one, or is the head unit only capable of driving all the speakers? (In the future I'm also thinking of placing an external amp, not for subs, but for more control and precision)
What kind of speakers am I missing, and more important, what kind of speakers is a good choice to add? I'm thinking about adding a 6x9" coax speaker behind the rear seats. But in the front, what could be a good choice there?
I also think that the sound from the rear doors are a bit diffuse and has a lacking of treble. Is that speaker only an midrange speaker, and should I replace that one to? It seems like it is uncapable of handling to much power, so pherhaps I have to replace it anyway..
Well... if anyone took the time to read thrue all this, I would really appriciate any tip I can get! Thanx!
