The likelihood of a first car getting crunched -- especially if your young driver is a boy -- is fairly high. Minimize your losses by picking up an old 900 or 9000 if you want the kid to learn the feel of, and be protected by the safety of, a Saab. I have a teen daughter who's been driving an `84 900 for a year. She's pretty good (and a definite Saabophile) but I still haven't tossed her the keys to my 9-5, even though I get frequent hints that she wouldn't mind that in the least.
That having been said, the 9-5 seems about as reliable as most cars. The down side is that dealers like to fix them by replacing big expensive assemblies costing $2000 instead of taking them apart and replacing the $17.00 piece that's actually broken. The blend door and ABS ECU issues that you'll find on this board are notorious examples, and are DIY-able.
