When I turned 16 (5 years ago! Wow I'm getting old!), my parents bought me a '95 9000. I still have never been pulled over (didn't even have a radar detector until last year) and have only been in one accident that wasn't my fault. My car thankfully wasn't totaled.
I think it all depends on the kid. My parents knew how I'd take good care of the car because I'm anal. If I notice a tiny scratch, I'm out there with 3M scratch remover and a buffer. But not ever kid is like that. One of my friends slammed his Jeep into a wall, looked at the damage, said "whatever" and kept driving. Some kids will be like that, some will be anal like me.
That said, there's merit to not wanting to put a young driver into a really fast car (like the SAAB). Again, it all depends on the kid. You kind of need to get a feel on how your son drives, and how he'll drive without you there.
Reliability really isn't an issue. It's definitely not going to be the Lexus, but you've had SAABs so you know what to expect in that regard, only this will be much better than your old ones. Safety is key, and you're not going to find many other cars that are as safe as the SAAB. Definitely not as safe AND fun as the SAAB!
Good luck!
