My eldest daughter is 18 and has been driving for a year and a half. We didn't want her driving our cars, plus, since we live in a semi-rural area and she has a lot of activities, we didn't want her off someplace and limiting our mobility.

So we got her a '95 9000 CS with automatic. It cost a coupla grand plus a surge of parts as the car was hitting a maintenance cycle (tires, radiator, motor mounts, front brakes, etc). But now my daughter has a Saab that runs well, is safe, and didn't cost a bundle. She has spent most of her life in Saabs (we've had one for 22 years) and says it's "her dream car." She is proud of her " '95 9K, " as she calls it. Kids are thrilled just to have a set of wheels they can call their own, and unless they have a large sense of entitlement, will be happy with almost anything as long as it runs and doesn't break down.

With a late model like a '02 9-5 there is also a "damage factor" outside of accidents. It's the stuff like running into a snowbank or curb and damaging the front airdam; grazing a tree with her rear quarter panel--all stuff that does the kind of minor damage that is a nuisance to repair. It's not so bad on a 11 year old car--you can let some stuff go. But on one 4 years old you want to get this stuff taken care of. And this stuff is almost inevitable.

If you want her in a Saab, find her a '95 or later 9000, an NG 900 or 9-3. They can be had for reasonable money and give you the safety you want without the risk of damaging a nicer car. Plus an older car will be a lot less expensive to insure. Here in NH, adding one new driver doubled the rates for both my wife and I, and that was with our daughter as principal driver on the oldest car.

Another option is buy a wagon to suit your needs and put her in the Lexus.

I do encourage you to write up a "driving contract" with your daughter that sets up responsibilities and expectations. You both sign it. We did one and it worked very well.

There. Getting off my soapbox now. 8^)
