Check the Car&Driver October '01 and February '02 issues.
The first one has a S4, WRX and BMW 330i comparo where the S4 was declared the winner. In all but 2 measured disciplines the S4 was the best. The only 2 where it was second were 0-60 and 1/4 mile results and by only 0.1 second in both cases behind the WRX.
The 1.7 mile lap time was almost 2 seconds better than the WRX's. Not bad for a car that is about 450 pounds heavier. According to the testers the S4 is easiest of the 3 to drive fast.
The WRX is a great fast car for the money but that's about it.
The February '02 issue has a 7 luxo manuals comparo. The Viggen ended up 6th. In today's competition it's a dated design and is way too expensive. I hope Saab did its homework for its replacement.
