I've seen the comparisons...

and still chose the Viggen over the S4, BMW 330Ci, Lexus IS300, Audi TT, and Merc. The WRX wasn't out yet, although I've driven one. People buy cars for a variety of reasons. I chose the Viggen because it has quite a bit of room, looks nice, is very fun to drive, has good snow abilities, and is relatively inexpensive. If my sole criterion was dry road driveability, I'd choose the BMW, as I like rear wheel drive and it's fast enough. If my criterion was how fast I could go, the S4. If it was "badge snobbery," the BMW. If it was cost, the Lexus or WRX. On looks, I'd have to choose the BMW, as the Audi is one of the most booring looking cars I've ever seen, the WRX is simply ugly, and the Lexus is too japanese. I chose the Viggen because for a variety of reasons, the likes of which none of these cars has.
Will the Viggen win an autocross against these cars? Who cares? I've never autocrossed and never will. I will say that I pass a surprising amount of BMW 328s/330s and Audi A4s (there aren't many S4s to pass), to the point where I have to reduce gear in order not to smash into them. Most people don't drive very fast and never really use their cars to their full potential. So, while the 9-3 might be on a dated platform, I still enjoy driving it, and don't really care what a bunch of Southern California auto writers has said. Let them take a 330 and try and put a freezer in it.
