Well it's hot out again... Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 14:18:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I asked about this last year, but I want to see if I can get any more input. I have a 2001 9-5 SE V6 with 176k miles on it. When it's hot out if I have the A/C on and the engine is working hard the temp gauge will go up, maybe 3/4's to the top, but then once I level out after a hill or something it returns back to normal. Now, this sort of has me thinking the thermostat might be stuck partially shut? I have all the maintenance documentation since the car was new, and it's the original thermostat. But what's weird, and leads me to believe it's not the thermostat, is that after I turn the car off, and the coolant stops flowing, the temp gauge really climbs (this is turning the engine off and leaving the key in the ON position so the gauges still work). Today it was about 80, and I was driving with no A/C and the windows down. Driving around I can hear both radiator fans on high (usually they only both come on with the A/C) and after I park the temp gauge spikes. Last year I had it get into the red zone and ding at me when I restarted the engine after 5-10 min. in a store.
Last summer I brought it to my indy who took it out for a drive in hot weather, pulled over, and plugged in the Tech II with the engine off. He said the temp went up to 240 degrees or something like that. He cleaned out the radiator of a lot of dirt and crap and it helped, but it's still doing it this year. Maybe if it were the 4-cyl I would just throw a new thermostat at it, but that's a big-a$$ job on the V6. Any other suggestions?
