All SAAB engines have a heat spike immediately following engine shut-down.
The amount of the spike is dependent on the ambient air temperature, and how hard the engine was run prior to shutdown. Some added factors are altitude, and fuel.
Engine oil thermostat could be failed, causing the increased temps, but I'm thinking that is exclusive to 4 cylinder engines, not on the V6.
At 176,000 miles, my choicew would be riding with TECH2 engaged to the car, and taking "engine snapshots" during the test ride, could really assist to isolate your problem, rather than "throwing parts at it" per se.
I'd think that most all readers would suggest to change the thermostat, if it's "original" to the car...and yes, I know it's a rather costly procedure....one disadvantage to the V6, but at least you don't have the sludge issues of the 4's, right...
I wish you the best in your quest to troubleshoot this...
