The thermostat cap keeps the system pressurized. This is good because the greater the pressure, the higher the boiling point of the liquid. As the system gets hot and pressurizes, the cap prevents the coolant from boiling off and keeps the coolant in a useable temperature range. Just think of the first law of thermodynamics, PV=RT. If the cap fails, your coolant would most likely be boiling out and not keep the engine very cool. Hope this helps!
