I certainly don't have a problem with anyone preferring an autobox, after all, 90% of Americans would never buy a stick and probably can't even drive one. Especially for those with commutes in heavy traffic, an auto makes sense.
I am surprised however, that on a board like this where only enthusiasts spend/waste their time so many people are so strongly against the Saab manual.
In response to Lou and others: Yes, autos are certainly getting much better, but they still lack the basic fun and involvement of a manual. My wife and I owned an Acura Legend GS for a while, and its auto was amazing - extremely sporty and fun (and actually better to drive than the rare manual they offered - reminds me of the Saab debate).
I certainly drool over the Ferrari F1 box and the new BMW SMG, but if I were to buy these cars, I would NEVER choose such options - part of the thrill of these cars is the manual involvement. Yes the F1 box can do perfect rev-matching on downshifts faster than a pro, but I would love the challenge of perfecting such technique myself.
