Jeff: FYI,if you think that shifting a Farrari is fun, think again. I have had two, and once you get over the emotional aspect of driving it, and just try to evaluate it objectively,Ferraris have clunky shifters. The aluminum gate is not condicive to smooth shifts, and the throws are kind of long, and the effort is high. Is this what is supposed to be what we consider fun? I'll take the new F-1 transmission any day over a conventional stick. Someone else made a good comment yesterday about why we tend to dwel on the clutch and stick being the definition of what enthusiasts think about when evaluating cars, when there are so many other parts of the equation, and I really think that is a point that people are missing. To segment cars into classes where we say the stick versions are "real drivers cars" and to poo po the automatics as for some reason "not the real thing" just does not make sense to me. The stick is a carryover from the days when there was nothing else.It was the original idea on how to make a limited rev range provide performance in a broader range. It was the engineers "first pass" at the whole thing.
For a long time, since most enthusiasts tend to look to racing as the place where ideas are validated, most so called "enthusiasts" would look to racing, and see that they were still shifting and clutching. Well guess what? they stopped doing that! They are flicking their thumbs now, and we can as well.
To your comment about cars like the CTS and Lincoln LS offering manuals, let's give it a year and see how many of them actually go out the door. Let's also see how they do in the resale market.I wonder how many Lincoln dealers will actually stock V-6 stick shift LS's. I doubt that many do.
Being a bit facetious here, but just ask your local rock star or drug dealer for a ride in his 360 Modena F-1 sometime. It is phenomenal, and will make you forget about shifting the old fashioned way forever.
