Q: if the engine is designed to give a flat torque...

curve, then what advantage does a 5-speed transmission have over a 4 ? I figured the basic idea of a higher number of gears was to keep the engine in its "sweet spot", but if the torque curve is flat, it seems that wouldn't matter (you lose more in the time transitioning between gears than you make up by staying in the very peak of the torque curve) Can somebody tell me what's wrong with my physics ?
Another way of stating the same question: if you have a continuously variable transmission (they seem to be on their way here), then does one even need to bother with flattening the torque curve ? I think this is an interesting question for Saabers to consider, since certainly one of the things we like about Saab engines is the torque response.
