In a given gear the peak acceleration occurs at the peak of the torque curve, not the peak of the power curve. Changing gears changes the effective lever arm, and allows the car to be in the optium torque band for a given wheel speed. Let's take a practical example: SAAB 9-5 in 3rd gear. You will find the peak acceleration occurs over the band where the torque curve has its maximum, somewhere in the 2000 - 4000 rpm range depending on model. The power peak is above 5000 rpm, but the aceleration is much lower up there. If max acceleration occured at the power peak we would all drive with the car at the red line. Sure some cars such as race cars have the torque peak way up near the power peak - but max
acceleration is still at the torque peak.
