Let's get some basic physics straight here:
Force = Mass x Acceleration (F = M.A)
Power = Force x velocity (P = F.V)
Torque = lever arm length x Force (T=RxF)
So acceleration is proportional to torque (not to power).
also Power = Torque x engine RPM x constant
A well-designed engine has a flat torque curve starting at low RPM, (e.g. a SAAB engine) so you get full acceleration early on, and the engine can hold it as the power builds. Eventually drag and other retarding frictional forces dominate, so typically near max power in top gear the acceleration drops to zero (terminal velocity). If the engine has a torque peak near the power peak it will have terrible low-end acceleration, and will have to be revved like an Italian lawnmover (AKA FIAT).......
