It was no B234R engines in the 9-5 at least here in US but it was called B235E, R and later L.
I have to strongly disagree. It was a time when Saab made "real" engines but that ended in 1999 with the B235 engine when everything seemed to gone downhill in the everlasting chase of fuel economy.
Overall, I think the V6 engine has had less problems than the 4 cyl from 99 and up and most of it was due to neglect from the owner and dealership not knowing about the timing belt and the replacement intervals and how to do it.
The other bad thing with the V6 was the turbo and the sensitive seals starting to leak and that was also a costly repair but it was quite a few 4 cyl engines having turbo seal problems as well.
The ignition cassettes was just as bad on the 4 cyl as the V6 but at least, the later version for the V6 last compared to the 4 cyl that still keeps going bad after umpteenth renditions.
