Doing 100mph and when she was pulled over and asked why she was driving so fast, she said` she was late for her hair appointment... so I suppose GM might have thought if grandma is ever late for church she might do 115 getting there.
But in all seriousness the oil pan could of just as well come off the v6 being it had poor neglect, but still if both motors were neglected the same way the 6 and the 4 in the end it would be the 4 still chugging along because of the single reason of the belt on the 6. Don't get me wrong I`m all for a bigger motor. I don't intend to seem I`m praising the 4 cylinder but as for Saab putting together a motor the 4 is.. well unmatched. I wish the 6 came with a timing chain in-which this discussion would never had taken place, its to bad Saab didn't take two 4 cylinder motors and banged them together to create a v8 complete with timing chains. I`m not against the 6 I`m against the belt it carries,
to be frank if I were intending on purchasing a Saab 9-5 and I found Saabnet
or had been recommended to this site from someone to ask a few questions
being I wasn't sure about the pro`s and con`s of a v6 or the 4 which at this point in-time they are both equal in my eyes.
This is the time it would be critical info for me to hear along with everything between the two, if we were to leave it at, this reply` (just replace the timing belt at every 60,000 and cut the sentence short)
it would seem to me yeah` ok replace the belt when I can get around to it. To mention what can happen to the 6 if the belt is not replaced would probably be the deciding factor. For me it is, the one thing Saab got right was the 4 cylinder when they equipped it with a chain.
Say Saab had the rolls reversed and the chain was on the 6 and the belt was on the 4. I go where the chain goes, its not the matter of who's right or who`s wrong. I`m just adding to the pro`s and con`s of the two. This may not be the deciding factor for Bob being he wants the 6 no matter what, @ lest he now knows how important the belt is, and not to disregard the 60,000mile intervals if planning on keeping the car for any length of time. You and I may know this info is just normal maintenance for the 6 but as to how clueless people are let me add this short story,
Over Christmas I had a chance to visit my dear old mother and she started talking about a strange noise coming from her car, I asked her about when she changed her oil, she said` just the other day, then I asked when she last had her transmission fluid changed (auto) She looked at me dumbfounded and said transmission fluid? .. she had no clue there was even fluid in her automatic transmission. She`s been everywhere in this car, the thing has about 80 to 90,000 miles its due.. for the junkyard.
point being.. people are clueless when it comes to proper maintenance on a vehicle, and when the statement is made to a person (proper maintenance) the person would just rather agree, and not knowing what that even means.
Currently I`m searching for a Saab so when Mom calls me complaining her car just quit working I`ll have one ready, perhaps I`ll get her the 6 and mention (change the timing belt at 60,000 miles) then leave. She wouldn't change it because she would forget or wouldn't think it was That important.
No ones right or wrong here, it just lack of info being supplied to Bob. I don't know if he knows about timing belts so I`d thought I`d mention it.
