Absolutely, if it was a 86 16V you replaced the tensioner in, but I bet the chain was probably good to go without replacing but it's hard to second guess repairs done by others.
The 84 to 86 16V engines had a timing chain tensioner with only about 3-4 tension positions (very coarse) and when the tensioner was close to but not quite there yet to jump to the next tension level, it could be a whole bunch of slap when the chain hit the upper pad in the valve cover.
The cure was to unscrew the tensioner and screw the newer style one in with a lot finer teeth in the ratcheting system.
It was a service bulletin out about that.
The old 900s and 9000 just about never stretched the timing chain but with the introduction of the B235 engine it seems that the tensioner was beyond factory specs almost when the car rolled off the line.
Saab even extended the allowed tension length and I bet it was to avoid having to replace to many chains under warranty when they were beyond 11mm.
