You'll be amazed at the difference replacing the cable can make. While the Mitsubishi starter has a reputation for slower cranks, its a lot faster than what you've become accustomed to.
The corrosion on the cable is likely increasing the resistance to the point where it is preventing the battery from recharging in an efficient manner, so short trips and frequent restarts just run down the charge. This was my experience - it took my drive to work (35 miles @ highway) to keep the battery at a reasonable charge, but local errands were a challenge.
I'll also mention that my old cable looked just fine at the battery end -- the bulk of the visible deterioration was at the alternator lug end. Apparently as the resistance builds, the alternator works harder and can heat up substantially, causing the more visible evidence of an issue.
