Think of a concert hall. Where does the music come from? How does it reach your ears?
Low frequencies (bass) are non-locatable so they can be anywhere. Saab uses the trunk as a bass baffle. But mids and highs need to be located closer to the listener's ears so they can locate vocals and instruments accurately. The front speakers and center channel in the 9-5 are perfectly placed for this effect. Mids in the doors and subs in the rear fill out the sound stage.
Lots of engineering went into the system design. Bose does a great job of doing the same kind of engineering but obviously they have their own concepts of sound re-creation.
I had a Bose system in an Infiniti and found it to be quite mellow sounding even when cranked up. The HK system in the 9-5 is a lot brighter and punchier than any Bose system I've heard. Think of it this way: If you listen to classical and light jazz, maybe the Bose system is better. If you listen to rock and blues or anything with strong vocals, the HK system is superior.
I can imagine the debates between BMW engineers and HK engineers when designing that system. Egos big enough to fill Madison Sq Garden, I'll bet. Adding in the typical BMW owner to the conversation is like throw nitro on an open flame.
