Regarding you point about the dash speaker mounts. Consider the fact that there are already 6.5" speakers in the doors, so running an additional tweeter or mid/hi driver up higher in the door should be simple. At least as simple as running them into the dash. Also, consider that the addition of a 3rd speaker complicates that location further.
Door mounts, as in the Audi/Bose system have their own pitfalls.. Pointing 2 high frequency drivers directly towards each other is hardly considered an ideal solution by an audiophile. While the dash speakers tend to reflect the sound too much.. so you can see that each of the two solutions has its pro's and con's...
Many will also disagree about the system being too "front focused". A stage or soundstage is ideally located in front of you at a concert hall. If you have too much sound coming from behind you, then you tend to lose imaging or location of the instruments or source. The way our ears are designed somewhat confirms this... as they are angled/oriented in a way to receive the majority of the sounds we hear from in front of us. This is what imaging is all about.
Now having said all that.. I do tend to agree with the comments about the brightness or harshness of the front dash drivers.. I do think the balance would be fine if the quality of those dash drivers was somewhat better. However replacing these isn't as easy as others have suggested, as there are 3 drivers to replace, and they are typically sold in pairs.. And they also have some weird impedance ratings.. so you could end up with a center speaker balance problem if you do replace all 3...
Thanks...
