Hi 9sound,
You started out your post with an inflamatory statement (" I have had my
share of problems with the 9-5 and so many others have too, per this
board."). I hope this doesn't make you target for flame. I assure you
that none of it will come from me.
You have to think of Saab and GM's relationship as a symbiotic
relationship, and it is important to know that this relationship is not
completely financial.
GM does not need Saab to be its cash cow. GM's got money. It survived
the 70's and 80's. GM has an image problem, which it is trying to correct.
This is where Saab can help. In addition, GM was in some dire need of
engineering inspiration, and Saab can help in this area as well.
So, it is sufficient for GM to lose money, which it has plenty of, to
obtain help with image and engineering.
GM will never make the bulk of its money from Saab. That will not
happen in a billion years. GM will make money from selling Chevrolets.
Don't worry about GM. GM will be fine.
Revamping Saab's line-up of cars will be difficult. Saab has to balance
forces of the market-place and demands of its enthusiast community.
It had to do this juggling act when it got rid of the hatch-back, and now
it has to fight the die-hards with its choices for new engines. So, given
this angst and tension, it is not so easy to completely revamp Saab
line-up and not be accused by Saab enthusiasts of selling re-badged
Chevrolets.
To address the first issue, did you not notice the quality improvements
in 9-5? Warranty service is not causing Saab to lose money, not anymore.
Those huge incentives are causing GM to lose money on Saab.
thanks
Jae
