GM brings parts commonality and reliable suppliers to Saab. And money to continue operating.
Saab brings small engine expertise (sorely lacking at GM... witness the Quad 4, etc.). The new "global 4" would not have been possible without Saab's and Opel's influence. It has balance shafts, direct ignition, great low end torque, and wonderful turbo charging possibilities. Saturn has already benefited from this technology in its L series.
Saab has always been an assembler of an automotive package. It was never big enough to design and manufacture a whole car like GM or Ford. It assembles engines from Opel or Saab, transmissions from Saab or Aisin/Warner, brakes from ATE or Girling, etc., all on shared platforms (9000 - Lancia/Alfa/Saab, 9-3 Opel, 9-5 Opel). So it can create a harmonious reliable car by assembling the best pick of parts and giving it that unique Saab attention to detail.
