Greg,
No, it does not "use" enough( I cannot "see" that it uses any for that matter, but I know it does) to warrant a top-off in 5,000 in my new 2002 9-5 AERO, now with about 4,000 miles.
In my '02 9-3 SE 205 hp, 7,500 miles has no perceptible effect on the oil level either--and in this car over the last 12 months I've used Mobil 1 5W-30 and used Mobil 1 0W-30 and no loss with it either. And if your on that oil change schedule, A1/B1 is fine.
The oils I saw while in Sweden last week were labeled from the API system, to the ACEA system, depending on brand name.
(The high-line products AKA full-synthetics were more ACEA A3/B3 labeled. Typical retail weight 5W-40. the price was a whopping SEK 140 or over 14 dollars a liter !)
I think as this phenomenon raises interest in the USA, you'll see Mobil 1 meet these requirements at all levels either with existing products reformulated like super-syn for example, or a new "ultra" Mobil 1 lineup --
No noises suddenly appear with a switch from 5W/30 to 0W/30. If there is a noise, it was always there.
My thoughts are that in Jason's case, due to the facts of a new car and that there has been a sudden cold snap in the Northeast, that has something else going on under the hood. Not synthetic oil viscosity affects.
I am also wondering if the dealer overfilled Jason's car @ the oil change. THey try to "stuff" all 4 liters into the sump, whereas I can only seem to get 3.5 to 3.75 into the sump and consider it properly filled.
As I said to Jason, "You have to let the car "break-in" before you start changing everything."
7,500 miles is the typical (for me) break-in point.
Then I evaluate things like noises, rattles, etc.
Hey, just my opinion. Has worked well over 25 SAAB yrs. and over a million SAAB miles--must be doing something right.
