did not have fuel gauges. They had a valve which you could turn from inside the car. The normal setting drew fuel from an opening a bit above the bottom of the tank. If you ran out, you could turn the valve to "Reserve", and fuel was drawn from the very bottom of the tank, giving you enough extra, presumably, to drive to a gas station. I think our "R" stands for "reserve", and assume this is how that got started.
